Your Simple Summer Skincare: Embracing the Aviela African Black Soap Routine

African Black Soap is a part of West African body care rituals which has been passed down for generations, made by roasting plant matter like cocoa pods into ash, then blending with oils, butters, and water to create a solid bar. The result is a soap that is alkaline, lightly exfoliating, and deeply cleansing. No artificial fragrance, no synthetic foaming agents — just pure  natural  ingredients.

Aviela's African Shea Black Soap is handmade in Ghana using unrefined Shea Butter, cocoa pod ash, coconut oil, neem oil, and palm kernel oil. Earthy in scent and dark in tone, the bar reflects its unique process. It's a functional, effective soap - for both face and body - crafted to meet the real needs of skin such as effective cleansing, protecting the skin's natural barrier, and helping calm irritation, especially in summer. Our approach is grounded in authenticity and respect - for the ingredients that we use and for the women who craft out soaps. Every ingredient is purposefully selected to serve your skin.

Why Aviela African Shea Black Soap is Your Summer Skin Essential

Cleanses - Properly

The primary function of soap is to clean — and black soap excels at it. Its cleansing action comes from the chemical reaction between cocoa pod ash and plant oils. The ash, once mixed with water, produces potash, a naturally alkaline substance that helps dissolve oils and dirt on the skin. Unlike popular cleansers with alkaline levels of pH 8-9, African black soap has a naturally higher pH of around 10-12, which makes it particularly effective at lifting away sweat, excess sebum and environmental buildup without irritating the skin because of its natural alkaline formation.

Lauric acid found in the coconut oil contributes to natural lather and palm kernel oil also strengthens the bar while thoroughly cleansing the skin — leaving no waxy residue or tightness on the skin.

Helps Prevent Moisture Loss

During the summer, frequent washing risks compromising the skin’s natural defenses. This can lead to moisture being lost from the skin resulting in dry skin which can further lead to heat rash. The Unrefined Shea Butter in the black soap delivers plant-based lipids that form a breathable, invisible layer on the skin — reducing water evaporation post-wash. It is essential to protect the skins lipid barrier as it plays a vital role in maintaining the skin’s natural protective barrier.  The Coconut oil which has fatty acids reinforces the skin’s lipid barrier, protecting the skin from becoming dry and sore.

Nourishes — With Natural Nutrients

Each use of African black soap deposits nutrients onto the skin. Shea Butter and Neem Oil retain compounds like vitamins A and E, along with skin-compatible fatty acids that reinforce the skin’s outer layers.

Meanwhile vitamin E defends against stress, which helps also maintains the skin's natural barrier function day to day.

Helps Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation is the skin’s response to stress — including heat, friction, or product overload. The skin naturally responds to these stress factors by producing signaling proteins known as Cytokines to control inflammationHowever excessive Cytokines can drive to skin conditions such as redness, itching, and swelling on an already inflamed skin. The Shea butter in the Black soap helps break this cycle by calming these skin irritants and helps reduce the inflammation.

Offers Antioxidant Support

Summer skin is constantly exposed to oxidative elements such as pollution, UV exposure, and heat which creates ‘free radicals' that damage the skin. African Black soap, through its raw ingredients, naturally provides antioxidant protection.

The vitamin E found in both the Shea and Neem oils, have antioxidant properties that protects skin. Furthermore, the  Cocoa ash adds plant-derived micronutrients known as polyphenols which help neutralise these free radicals. The soap’s natural formula — free from artificial colours or fragrance — reduces the chance of oxidative irritation often triggered by synthetic additives in other soaps.

Summer Ritual:  Morning and Evening Routine.

In summer — when you’re sweating more and spending more time outdoors — a proper cleanse is what your skin needs to remove clogged pores, prevent breakouts and avoid irritation.

We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to using Aviela African Shea Black Soap across the body and face to help you get the best results:

Full-Body Cleanse (Torso, Back, Arms, Legs, Feet)

How to use:

  • Wet your body thoroughly with warm (not hot) water.
  • Rub the black soap between your hands to build a lather, or rub it directly onto a clean flannel, loofah, or exfoliating cloth.
  • Starting from the shoulders, and work your way downwards in broad, circular motions — focus on the chest, underarms, lower back, and feet.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water, making sure no lather or residue remains on the skin.

Tip:
Pay special attention to areas where SPF has been applied, or where fabric and sweat can cause irritation — like the back of the neck, underarms, bra line, waistband, and backs of the knees. Be sure to be thorough on those areas where deodorant may have been applied throughout the day to ensure removal of buildup and proper cleansing of pores. If you’ve been out all day don’t neglect your feet either as sweat and irritation from socks and shoes can leave the skin feeling itchy and inflamed.

Facial Cleanse

How to use:

  • Wet your face with warm water.

  • Work the soap into a rich lather between clean palms.

  • Gently massage the lather over your face using your fingertips — concentrate on the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) where oil builds up most.

  • Avoid vigorous scrubbing. The soap already contains  fine ash for gentle exfoliation.

  • Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and gently pat the face dry with a towel.

Tip:

Black Soap can also be used to remove makeup. Repeat the process twice to ensure all product residue is effectively removed.

Optional:
If shaving the face or beard area, rub the soap beforehand to the area you intend to shave, to soften the hairs. Then shave off the targeted area before rinsing off.  This leaves the targeted area feeling smooth and nourished. African Shea Black Soap can also be used along the jawline or around facial hair without causing irritation.

Scalp  Care

How to use:

  • Wet the scalp and create a lather in your hands.

  • Massage into the scalp using circular motions with your fingertips.

  • Rinse thoroughly and follow up with your usual hair care if needed.

After Cleansing : Moisturise As Needed

As black soap doesn’t leave a residue or dryness on the skin, you do not need heavy moisturisers after wash. Light moisturisers with good hydrating and protective properties can help keep your skin healthy and balanced.

  • For the body, apply shea body lotion or a light oil if the skin feels tight.

  • For the face, apply a non-comedogenic moisturiser or facial oil if needed — particularly around dry zones like the cheeks or around the nose.

  • Don’t skip SPF after your morning wash. Black soap cleans thoroughly, meaning sunscreen will sit more evenly on the skin — improving sun protection on the skin.
